OK, I have a few thoughts on this new “F your beauty standards” trend.
Disclaimer, I am probably going to upset a few people.
Let me start by saying, fat shaming is wrong, in general making people feel ashamed for any physical or character flaw is wrong.
On the flip side….being overly proud, even exuberant about your own physical/character flaw is also wrong.
You don’t see alcoholics being like….”F your society standards! I love what my addiction makes me and how it makes me feel!” WHY? Because they shouldn’t be proud, however, they should be accepted, they should be encouraged, they should be loved, but not to keep neglecting their bodies and spirits, but to grow and overcome these challenges they face to become a healthier being.
Lets go back to the basics for a second, lets talk about sin. Lying is a sin, adultery is a sin, and so on and so forth, and guess what, gluttony is a sin. Over indulging in any substance, whether that is food, drink, drugs, TV, shopping, or whatever you can think of IS A SIN! Today our society over indulges on EVERYTHING!
And it’s NOT OK!
Listen to me, I am not being a hypocrite, I am, as much as I hate to admit it, an obese woman in her mid twenties, and I am in NO WAY proud of that.
I am proud that I work hard, I am proud that I am a good (well try to be) wife, I am proud of the things I have overcome, and I AM beautiful. BUT…I have a problem….I have struggled with obesity my WHOLE life. I have been gluttonous for far to long, I have been lazy for far to long….and that is NOTHING to be proud of!
Being fat is not something to be proud of. Being unhealthy is not something to be proud of. I don’t care how many hashtags you make, how many unflattering photos you take, it will never be OK to neglect your body.
I will NEVER give up on trying to get healthy. I WILL NEVER stop trying to overcome! I may have bad days, bad weeks, heck I had a few bad years, but in the back of my mind I was still fighting, I never gave into the mind set of ‘oh I’m perfect the way I am, screw society’s standard, screw my health.’
Listen, I am not saying that we have to be a size zero, I am not saying that we are not beautiful, because EVERYONE is BEAUTIFUL, but what I am saying is that we can’t just roll over and decide it’s OK to be obese and unhealthy.
We only get a 100 or so years, and that is if we ARE LUCKY, and HEALTHY….it goes fast! Do you want wake up one day and wish you had done things differently? I know I don’t!
That is why I am fighting! I am fighting for my life, I am fighting for my health!
And then, to those of you who don’t know the struggle, or have never known the struggle of being overweight…don’t be passive, don’t say hey its OK, but also, DON’T BE CRUEL! YOU have the power to motivate, encourage and uplift anyone who is struggling with this, and can’t do that if you are constantly judging. You have to open your minds, open your hearts and try to understand where we are all coming from. Some of the most encouraging people I meet are strangers at the gym who tell me to keep going….they see I am working…and instead of thinking ugh, another fat girl on the elliptical, they pass by give me a thumbs up and they show me that they GOT MY BACK!
To wrap up my little rant here, basically my point is, obesity is not okay, unhealthy is not OK, cruelty is NOT OK, judgment is not OK. I agree, who cares what society says is beautiful, because everyone is beautiful, however, LETS CARE ABOUT OUR HEALTH, lets care about our future, lets care about our bodies, and lets care about each other.
Don’t let FAT become a trend, instead let HEALTHY and STRONG become the trend.
